Meme: More Unpopular Opinions (Harry Potter and Battlestar Galactica)

Harry Potter is such a huge fandom that I know any opinions that I have are popular somewhere and unpopular other places. So, just 'opinions' then.

Harry Potter

1. Draco Malfoy = my favorite character. From the time I read the first book all the way through until the epilogue, Draco holds my heart in his whiny brat hands. Because of Draco Malfoy, I read enemy slash! There's no other pairing where I feel the urge to read enemy slash, no matter how much chemistry the actors have (example: the Doctor and the Master have tons of very slashy chemistry together in several incarnations, yet I feel no urge to read slash stories about them). Yet, because of Draco, Harry/Draco is the type of fic that I read most often in HP fandom.

2. Everyone in the Marauders-era was a moron. James, Lily, Peter, Remus, Sirius, Severus, Dumbledore, etc. Morons. All of them. Also, crappy friends. Seriously, I would not want to know any of them (well, maybe Remus... nah. Not even Remus). This is why I read no Marauder-era fic, because I do not want to spend any more time with these characters than absolutely necessary (this one I am pretty sure is actually unpopular).

3. I do love Hermione a whole heaping lot. *hearts* I love Harry a whole lot. *hearts* I... love Ron conditionally, and he's my second favorite Weasley after Percy (who I love a whole lot). I find Ginny to be a mean-spirited plot device rather than a person and would have preferred Harry with Hermione or Cho or Luna or... I don't know, Susan Bones. Really, anyone. Pansy Parkinson. I'm not picky. Harry/Ginny = my anti-ship. They bring out the worst sides of each other. It's like Dawson/Joey, only Harry and Ginny actually married and had children. Horrifying.

4. Severus Snape totally needed to die in the seventh book, but he could have had a much better death scene. And that makes me sad.

5. I suspect that I disagree with JKR on every possible moral or ethical issue that exists. Particularly, I disagree with the premise that courage is our most important moral value. Also, the whole division of houses and the places she utterly failed to go with that still disappoints me. And the inequalities inherent in the Wizarding World that she sets up and then fails to deal with at all.

6. JKR is fabulous and wonderful at world modification. She sucks at world-building. Her universe does not contain a consistent internal logic. As a result of this, HP fandom has some of the most spectacular meta that exists. The meta and fanwanking in this fandom is a source of joy.

That's probably enough of those.

Battlestar Galactica

1. Hmm. Once again, I'm uncertain what's popular and what's not in this fandom. I've often had a lot of love for Kara, even when she and Lee (who I absolutely adore... most of the time) were trapped in the depths of the evil quadrangle. Her character always made sense, even when I wanted to smack her. I think that she and Lee are poisonous as a romantic couple but make an amazing platonic partnership. Even when I'm pissed at her, I react to her like she's a real person, so that's well-done on the part of the writers and actress.

2. Speaking of poison, Chief Tyrol with Cally makes me want to spit nails. This show manages to hit so many of my relationship squicks, but no place does this go as deep as it does with Tyrol and Cally. The pure visual of us seeing him beat her to a pulp (dream-induced or not) and then flash-forward to the two of them being in a relationship just twists my stomach in a very painful way. I love and adore the Chief and I kinda hate Cally in a 'flames on the side of my face' way but that doesn't make any difference. A guy put her in the infirmary and not only does she have no apparent issues with that, she appeared to be using him hurting her as her way 'in' to his affections, which only adds to my levels of complete and utter squick. I don't understand how either of them can stand to be in a room together without wanting to run screaming in opposite directions. And that's without getting into the whole thing of Cally shooting Boomer.

... the funny thing is, during the first season, I really adored Cally. I thought she was tough and really great.

More later, I think.
